March 2, 2010, a Tuesday
Joshua Tree National Park (Jumbo Rock), California, USA
— Another day of photography in Joshua Tree
I got up early enough to photograph sunrise, and left in the Jeep around 5:45.
There was an almost-solid cloud layer but there was some color to the east.
I went to my favorite area in Jumbo Rock Campground. The color never got really good before it started to fade. Then slivers of color started to form in the cloud layer and I was able to take advantage of that (left). The image was created by processing one RAW file twice to bring out the detail in the bright sky and the darker foreground and then combined in Photoshop.
I returned to the RV around 6:40. I worked up a blog entry, then processed three images for the blog. Then I processed images for a stock submission.
I had lunch around noon, then made a batch of Teriyaki Marinade and started marinating a flatiron steak. We packed up our computers and left in the Jeep at 12:50.
We went down the road towards Twentynine Palms and stopped when we had a Verizon Wireless Broadband signal so we could go online.
We returned to the RV at 2:50 and J packed up some printer inks that she just sold on eBay. We left around 3:15 in the Jeep with B.
We went to Keys View around 3:45. It was much closer than I thought, so we were plenty early for sunset around 5:40. :( We sat and visited in the Jeep, then B and I went out and looked around. I found some interesting bare juniper bushes that could be used for a foreground, but the sky wasn't too interesting because the clouds were few and far between. We went back to the Jeep and visited some more. All of us went out to shoot around 5:15, and by then the clouds had moved even further away, so I ended up using my 90 Tilt-Shift instead of a wider angle that I had wanted to use. We left around 5:50 and started heading back to the campground.
We stopped at the Ryan Mountain Trailhead so I could go out and photograph some of the Joshua trees. The color was faint, but the layers created by the hills/mountains was interesting. I used my 100-400 to get a different perspective than on the previous nights, and by the time I found a nice juxtaposition of Joshua trees, the layered hills were no longer visible. The image to the left was made from one RAW file processed three times. Two were to capture the detail in the bright sky and the dark foreground, and the third was a blend that helped me combine them in Photoshop.
We returned to the RV around 6:25 and I set up and started the grill.
We had dinner around 7:05 of grilled flatiron steak and leftover J's Bean Salad, Broccoli Slaw Salad (me), and potato salad (J).
After dinner, I processed two images for the blog, then we watched an episode of Desperate Housewives on DVD.
