S of Beaver Creek to Salmo Lake, Yukon Territory, Canada
— The Alaska Highway: Destruction Bay, Haines Junction, and Whitehorse
Had my normal breakfast. While there was a solid cloud layer above us, some beautiful light was coming in under it to illuminate our surroundings. We got underway at 9:49.
I listened to an episode of Car Talk.
We stopped at the Talbot Arm Motel in Destruction Bay at 11:48 to get 35l (9 gal) of expensive gas ($1.169/l) in the RV so we could easily make it to Haines Junction. We left at 11:57.
I had some Clif Bars for lunch as we drove along Kluane Lake.
We stopped at the Fas Gas in Haines Junction at 1:19 to fill up the RV with some more reasonable $1.119/l gas, We left at 1:30.
We stopped at the Yukon Inn parking lot in Whitehorse at 3:27 to borrow their wireless internet connection. When we had stopped in Whitehorse on our way north, we had used their wireless internet in their lobby, but this time we wanted to go online in the comfort of our mobile office. (You may read about our previous stay in Whitehorse beginning with my blog entry for July 16, 2009.) We got online through some open network, but I don't think it belonged to the Yukon Inn.
We had dinner there too around 5:30 of TGI Friday's Firecracker Sesame Chicken, then continued to work on our computers and enjoyed the net connection. We left at 6:50.
We went to the SS Klondike in Whitehorse at 6:58 so J could photograph the 1929/37 stern-wheeler that's a National Historic Site operated by Parks Canada. The cloud cover wasn't the best for photography, but J had been looking forward to photographing it. I stayed in the RV and did some computer work. J packed up and we were about to leave when I saw a bright spot forming in the cloud later and I suggested that she go back out to get ready to photograph it again. Sure enough, or "fortunately," the sun poked through a small gap in the clouds and lit up the stern-wheeler nicely. We left at 7:22.
We stopped at the Husky gas station in town to fill up the RV with some relatively cheap gas. It was $1.009/l on the pump and we got a 3% discount at the register when I went in to pay. :)
We went to the Liquor Store in town at 7:47. They didn't have any Asbach Uralt, but they had some Bommerlunder Gold Jubiläums Akvavit, a German Akvavit, that I had never seen before, and I just had to get a bottle. :) They also had some African Cream that came in a very interesting bottle. It was shaped like a squatter Bailey's bottle, but it was covered with a formfitting greenish/tannish zebra/leopard patterned cloth. I almost bought a bottle just for the bottle! We left at 7:56 and continued heading east on the Alaska Highway.
We got to Salmo Lake at 9:21 and we parked where we did on July 15, 2009. I unhooked the Jeep to be ready for the morning, then had some Bommerlunder Gold Jubiläums Akvavit. It had a very different flavor than the other akvavits that I've had. It was less dilly/annisy and more caramelly. Selected and processed images for the next blog entry.
