July 16, 2009, a Thursday
Salmo Lake to Whitehorse (Inland Kenworth), Yukon Territory, Canada
— Alaska Highway Day 9: An unplanned overnight in Whitehorse
After breakfast, I read the Klondike Hwy writeup in The Milepost. Turned the RV around, then hooked up the Jeep. Departed at 11:15.

The RV drivetrain noise was louder than ever before, and J even commented on it.

Across the Yukon River at 12:13. Got to the Whitehorse city limits at 12:21. Whitehorse is the capital of the Yukon Territory and is the largest city along the Alaska Highway.

We stopped at the WalMart in Whitehorse at 12:40, and I was pleased to find out that my phone gets data! I have a Palm Treo 755p, and I don't think Verizon Wireless has a data contract with the local carriers in northern BC because I haven't been able to get data on my phone for a long time. It was nice to be able to download the weather forecast on my phone using 4cast.

I had lunch while calling places in town to look at the RV drivetrain. None of the RV repair places in town could handle our rig, and I eventually set up an appointment with Inland Kenworth to have them take a look at it later in the afternoon. Meanwhile, J had gone in to do some shopping, so I went in to update her on the plans. I went back to the RV and unhooked the Jeep while J finished shopping.

We got to Inland Kenworth at 2:00. After a short wait, Steve, who I believe is the head of the service department, rode with us in the RV around the block. He thought it might be the steady bearing (for the drive shaft) or the differential. We went to the waiting room while someone took a look under the RV. Around 3:20, Steve came into the waiting room to let us know that it's a differential problem. There are shavings in it. He recommended that we spend the night there and they'd take the differential apart in the morning to find out if it's just a bearing or gears that have to be replaced.

We went back out to the RV at 3:37, then left in the Jeep at 3:49.

We went to the Extra Value grocery store to do more shopping.

We got back to the RV around 4:50, and I hooked up the electricity using an outlet designed for block heaters. I went online using my USB stick, and the connection was really slow.

Had dinner at 6:30 of leftover meatloaf. Did the dishes. Left around 7:15 by myself in the Jeep.

Went to the Yukon Inn near downtown to use their free WiFi. The connection is really fast — better than anything we've had in weeks! I was able to upload the images for the photo contest, and hoped that they'd accept them "late." I also uploaded photos for another contest while I had access to the great net connection.

Got back to the RV around 10:00, then did some more computer work before bed.
