January 19, 2010, a Tuesday
Abiquiu Lake, New Mexico, USA
— Photographed near Ghost Ranch with fresh snow!
I awoke around 7:00 and was instantly wide awake thinking about the problem with the website I was working on. I got out of bed, and it was a rather warm 33°F (1°C) outside. Snow was falling and there was already 3-4 in (7-10cm) on the ground — fantastic! That's why we came here — J wanted to photograph this area with snow.
The support person at the hosting service I emailed last night didn't really understand my problem so he didn't give me any good information. So, I broke down and added lots of debugging output to the code and forged ahead. The problem I was having was that some page tracking that was used for logging in wasn't working on the remote host — it took me to the wrong page after logging into the website. The debugging let me know that somehow the code thought it was getting passed to the error 404 page every time it also got passed to a good page, so that's why the login page was taking me to the error 404 page. So, I changed the code so it wouldn't add the error 404 page to the history, and it worked like a charm. :) We left around 10:30 in the Jeep after the sky started to brighten.
We went to the same area as yesterday near Ghost Ranch to photograph the snow-covered rock formations. It was much easier walking on the snow today than on the muddy ground yesterday. Shortly after we arrived, the clouds thickened and the snow started falling heavily — not very good shooting conditions. Then the snow stopped, the clouds started to break up, and conditions were almost perfect for photography! Unfortunately, the sun wasn't in the right place and most of the compositions I wanted to take would have had my shadow in them. :( I was able to get a few good shots, but it was frustrating to be surrounded by so much beauty and not be able to photograph it well. It was also quite warm, and the snow started melting as soon as the sun came out.
We returned to the RV around 12:40, 44°F (7°C). I cleaned the snow off the roof of the RV and the solar-electric panels were already mostly clear, so we were getting good solar-electric power. :)
I had lunch around 1:00 and downloaded the images I took this morning. Then I did a quick downselect of the images in Capture One (C1).
We moved the RV to Site 1 around 3:30 to get better solar-electric power all day long. Of course, just after we set up in Site 1, the sun went behind a cloud bank. Oh well, we;ll be better positioned for the rest of our time here.
We had dinner at 6:15 of steak fajitas and fresh guacamole — mmm.
We turned the generator on at 7:05 for two hours. I processed an image for the blog. We had some blueberry pie while watching an episode of Desperate Housewives on DVD. Some potential clients for my photo safaris to Tanzania and gorillas in February 2011 let me know they're back on board, so those safaris are now a go — whoopie! Also FYI, my bat photo tour in August 2010 is also a go.
