November 21, 2009, a Saturday
City of Rocks State Park, New Mexico, USA
— Photographed the rocks
We took it easy this morning — depending on your definition of course. :) J made a big breakfast of omelets and potatoes while I tilted the solar-electric panels to take advantage of the early-morning light. The breakfast was good, but as J said, the potatoes could have used a little more olive oil. We sat and talked for a while. I did the dishes, then left around 9:55 and ...

Walked around the campground. I went up and around the Pegasus loop and was happy to see that the large group of kids was packing up to leave. I continued back down to the electric sites on the east side, and stopped to check out a cute little trailer that was opened up. It was a tiny home-made trailer with a lot of class. I passed J, who had left to go for a walk, as I was turning the corner of the loop to head north back to the RV.

I returned to the RV at 10:30 and read through the September Outdoor Photographer while the hot water heater was working. I showered, and J returned from her walk. She had stopped to visit with Ben, the owner of the cute little trailer, and she was all excited.

Teriyaki Marinade

  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1/4 cup dry sherry
  • 2 med cloves garlic, crushed or minced
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tbs grated orange or lemon peel
Mix soy sauce, oil, sherry, ginger & peel. Pour over steak. Marinate 2 to 3 hrs, turning occasionally.

Good for one flank steak or four chicken breasts.
Had lunch around 12:10, then did some computer work. J prepared the teriyaki marinade (right) for our flatiron steak, a recipe from her old neighbor L. I stowed the solar-electric panels around 2:30 because the sun was now directly behind the RV, so tilting the panels towards the passenger side was no longer helping. I left at 2:55 in the Jeep by myself.

I had planned to photograph some of the rock formations with the nice wispy clouds I had seen while stowing the solar-electric panels, but the clouds had moved off far to the east. :( I drove around to scout potential locations to photograph at sunset if the clouds stayed high enough in the eastern sky.

I returned to the RV around 3:20 and picked up J.

She took me to see a pictograph she had found on one of her walks. It was a neat Kokopelli! It was also in some mixed light cast by a nearby tree, so we didn't photograph it. I got my camera gear out and started to photograph some rock formations (below left) while J photographed other formations. The plan was for J to pick me up in the Jeep after a while and then she'd take me to another pictograph that she found. Well, I thought the pictograph was near one campsite, so I slowly made my way there and then waited for J. No J. Then I headed back towards the RV and photographed some more formations along the way. I stopped at the RV, where my phone was, and got two voicemails from J. She had been driving around looking for me and had more or less given up so she could get back to photographing the rock formations. I called her to touch base, and left a voicemail. Then I left, with my phone, and headed to where J said she'd be photographing. I stopped to photograph some rock formations, including the natural window below right. As I was photographing it just after the sun had set, J drove up in the Jeep. She returned to the RV and I finished shooting then walked back to the RV.

I returned to the RV around 5:10 and set up the grill. Then I downloaded the images I took today and did a quick downselect. I grilled the steak and made a salad while J prepared a baked potato for us to split.

We had dinner around 6:00 of the grilled flatiron steak, the baked potato, and a salad. It was tasty!

J did the dishes while I downselected the images from today. Then I started to work up a blog entry, then I processed two images for the blog. I did some computer work before going to bed.
