November 22, 2009, a Sunday
City of Rocks State Park, New Mexico, to Tucson (BLM), Arizona, USA
— Photographed the rocks
We were awakened around 5:00 by the sound of an owl hooting outside the RV! It was probably a great horned owl, and he hooted for at least half an hour.
Had my normal breakfast. Finished a blog entry. We left around 8:40 in the Jeep.
J took me to see one of the Kokopelli pictographs (far left). It was in a shallow alcove, so I borrowed her flash to help illuminate it. (I currently keep my flashes and flash equipment in a case that rides underneath the dinette seat in the RV because I don't use it very often. However, I might have to rethink that scheme.) I used the flash with an off-camera cord and held it right under the 180 Macro so it would light up the top of the alcove — the darkest area.
Then J took me to see another Kokopelli, the one she had shown me yesterday. It was in a nice uniform shade this time, so we both photographed it (near left).
We returned to the RV at 9:45 and prepped the RV to move. We left at 10:00 with me in the RV and J following in the Jeep. We stopped near the Visitor Center to hook up the Jeep to tow, and J took some things to the recycling bins. We left at 10:15.
We headed back to Deming and got on I-10 W at 10:49. I listened to an episode of Car Talk.
We stopped at the Love's Truck Stop in Lordsburg at 11:51 for lunch and showers. After I had my sandwich, I was about to get in the shower when J said we wouldn't make our camping destination before sunset. I was surprised because I thought we'd have plenty of time, but I got dressed again and we left at 12:15.
Bossy, our GPS, said we'd reach our first destination in Tucson at 2:50, and because J agreed that we only had to make that one stop today, we decided to stop and take showers. We entered Arizona at 12:36. The Rest Area on I-10 just inside the border, where I had planned to stop and shower, was closed, so we kept going.
We stopped in Wilcox at 1:30 to shower. We got underway at 1:53.
I listened to another episode of Car Talk.
We reached the Camping World in Tucson at 3:15. We picked up some things, then went to the RV park next door to use their free dump station. We actually started taking on fresh water just before dumping, and dumped while taking on water — the first time we've done that. We left at 4:17.
We reached the patch of BLM land on the southwest side of Tucson at 4:39 — in plenty of time for the 5:20 sunset. We unhooked the Jeep, then I drove around in the Jeep to look for a good place to set up camp. I found a nice level spot with good solar-electric potential (no pun intended), then went back to get the RV. I pulled in heading almost due east, so after checking my compass, I didn't bother reorienting the RV to be heading exactly due east. The RV was also level enough not to mess with the Lynx Levelers. :) There was a hawk soaring over the nearby cliff as I was tilting the solar-electric panels. I went online using our nice fast Verizon Broadband Access signal. :)
We had dinner at 6:10 of Bertolli Chicken Florentine & Farfalle and Texas Toast.
J did the dishes, and I downselected the images I took today. I bid on, and won, a Quantum Cable CZ on eBay. That will let me connect a second Canon flash to the Quantum Turbo 2x2 Battery that I have, and I'll be able to operate my two-flash macro setup that way. My mother called and we talked for a while. I did some computer work before going to bed.
