August 14, 2010, a Saturday
near Gould, Colorado, USA
— Went to town and photographed at Cameron Pass
We got up later than usual. It was clear, calm, and about 37°F (3°C) outside. After my normal breakfast, I started to prep the image, and caption information, to send to Nature's Best for the semi-final round. We packed up our computers and left in the Jeep around 11:55.
We went to the River Rock Café in the Antlers Inn in Walden for lunch around 12:25. I had a Smothered Beef & Bean Burrito and J got a Shrimp Basket. We both enjoyed our food, and J especially liked the free Wi-Fi signal so she could upload images to her photography website. After I finished eating, I did a few things online, then I went out to the Jeep to start working on a blog entry — it was very uncomfortable to type with my laptop up on the table at our booth in the cafe. We left around 2:00.
We went to the North Park Super's to pick up a few groceries, then we went to the Shell to fill up the Jeep at $2.999/gal. We stopped at a fresh produce stand in town and J picked up some veggies.
We returned to the RV around 2:55 and I finished the blog entry. Then I did some computer work and looked at PhotoShelter. Ever since the potential web client contacted me about developing a nature photography website for him, I've been thinking about leveraging the gallery system that I'd create for him for the showcase images on my own photography website. PhotoShelter could provide an alternative gallery system for my stock images, but it's a lot more expensive than Exposure Manager which I use now.
We had dinner of lunch-like stuff around 5:15. I had my regular ham-and-Swiss sandwich, banana, and apple, and J had chicken noodle soup and watermelon. We left in the Jeep around 6:00.
We headed up to Cameron Pass to look for the bull Moose that we had seen there last night. He was out in the willow, but he was on his way to the tree line. He stopped there and laid down, so we parked in the lot at the pass and waited. I set up and photographed some of the Queen's Crown (left) at the edge of the parking lot, and I had a ball. I used my new heavy-duty tent stake to use to secure my Plamp, and it was much better than propping the Plamp on the ground like I used to do. J walked around the parking lot to get some exercise while periodically checking on the Moose.
J saw the bull Moose stand up around 7:50 and start making his way out into the willow. I finished up the shot I was taking, then switched to my wildlife camera and started photographing the magnificent bull Moose (left). It was rather dark because official sunset was around 8:00 and the sun had already been below the mountains for at least 20 minutes. Fortunately, he stopped feeding when someone with two dogs walked by, and I was able to get a nice sharp image with practically no shutter speed: 1/20 sec! We stopped photographing around 8:10 after it got even darker.
J suggested that we could return early tomorrow morning because the moose seemed to be hanging out around Cameron Pass. I was excited to do so!
We returned to the RV around 8:30. I downloaded the images I took then downselected them.
