Crested Butte to near Crested Butte, Colorado, USA
— Got the Jeep back and headed up into the mountains
We got up around our normal time. I had my normal breakfast then finished and uploaded the blog entry for yesterday. Our nice peaceful location was no longer — a backhoe was making a racket in the driveway next door. We left around 9:50 on foot.
We walked around town for a little exercise and went to Clark's Market to pick up a few things.
We returned to the RV around 10:25 as it started to sprinkle and there was steady rain by 10:35 — we made it back just in time. I did some things online. The guy from Crested Butte Auto Repair called at 10:57 to let us know that they got the new power steering pump in and that the Jeep would be ready today. Our old pump had a crack near the return line. I processed images for a stock submission. The backhoe stopped making a racket around 11:55 and J said her nerves were shot.
I had lunch around 12:15 and read some of the July 2010 Outdoor Photographer. Thee backhoe started up again around 12:45 and we prepped the RV to move — we couldn't take the noise any longer. We left around 12:55.
We went to the Crested Butte Visitor Center parking lot around 1:00 and I processed images for a stock submission. J wanted to get some free Wi-Fi, so I moved the RV closer to a nearby hotel around 1:45. J was able to get a strong Wi-Fi signal, but she couldn't transfer any data. I processed images for a stock submission. The RV wasn't very level, so I moved the RV again around 2:35 to be closer to the Visitor Center building. Now we could both get a nice strong Wi-Fi signal. I did some things online, then processed more images for a stock submission. The guy from Crested Butte Auto Repair called at 5:12 to let us know that the Jeep was ready. We finished what we were going then left around 5:25.
We went to Crested Butte Auto Repair around 5:30 to pick up the Jeep. J asked the guy all sorts of questions about the cause of the problem, and the guy basically said, "Having a Liberty." Apparently, Jeep Libertys are known for blown power steering lines. We left at 5:35 with me in the RV and J following in the Jeep.
We headed up CR-734, aka Slate River Road, to look for a good place to boondock.
We finally found a nice location and were level by 6:55. Conditions were good for wildflower photography, calm and overcast, so we quickly changed to go out to photograph. J set up to photograph a Mule Deer doe near our boondocking spot and I had two Clif Bars for the first part of dinner. Unfortunately, the overcast was on the thick side so it was rather dark. Instead of driving someplace to photograph wildflowers, we decided to walk down to the Slate River to scout possible landscape compositions. Along the way, we went by lots of wildflowers and decided to photograph them. I spent the whole time photographing some Alpine Milkvetch (left). Note the 8 second exposure — I told you it was dark!
We returned to the RV around 8:00. I ate a third Clif Bar to round out dinner while I downloaded the images I took, then I downselected them in Capture One (C1). There was a steady rain by 8:20. We have three bars of Verizon Broadband Access using our external cell antenna and one even without it. This place is great! We should have come up here the first night we dropped off the Jeep!
