July 5, 2010, a Monday
near Trout Creek Pass, Colorado, USA
— Visited with folks then explored the area
We got up around 7:20 and I had my normal breakfast. I worked up a blog entry then did some computer work. Around 11:15, J gave JC's sister, nephew, and their friend C a tour of the RV. The pantry in the office was a big hit — I think it's J's favorite improvement to the RV. We went out and hung out with the group, and J showed DC and then JC the pantry. The rest of the group left to head home around 11:45 — earlier than we thought they would.

I had lunch around noon and then did more computer work. I started to make some of my chili around 2:05 so that it would have time to simmer, then returned to doing some computer work.

We had dinner around 5:40 of my chili and a salad.

We left in the Jeep around 6:40 to explore the area.

DC had told us about some active beaver ponds, and we headed there. The ponds were extensive, and they were active. We stopped when we saw a young beaver swimming to a lodge, and it dove under the water shortly before we finished setting up to photograph it. We waited, and a Green-Winged Teal hen and four ducklings (tealings?) came downstream into the pond with the lodge. They weren't too cooperative, so we waited. Some mosquitoes enjoyed our presence much more than we enjoyed theirs. After quite a while, I went to check some ripples in the next pond downstream. It was the beaver, but it dove as I was getting into position to photograph it. I waited and called J over. After a while, I saw the beaver back in the main pond swimming by the lodge, so I went back. It dove way before I got close to it. I set up and waited, and the Green-Winged Teals swam by close enough so that I could get some images (left).

We left and headed back towards "home." We stopped to watch two young Pronghorn calfs not too far from the road. The sun had already set behind the mountains and the light level was too low for good photography, so we just watched them for a while.

We returned to the RV around 8:50. I prepared two slices of J's blueberry pie, warmed and with ice cream, and I think a frozen flatiron steak smashed my stocking right foot while I was trying to get the ice cream out of the stuffed freezer. I continued doing some computer work and J went to bed around 9:40. I finally went to bed around 12:20 after finishing a block of work.
