May 24, 2010, a Monday
Pawnee National Grassland, Colorado, USA
— Found a Swift Fox
We got up later than yesterday. I made instant coffee to go and J started a mug of tea steeping. We left in the Jeep around 7:20 with me driving one-handed. (You may read about my sprained right thumb on the blog entry for May 22, 2010.)
We drove around the Pawnee National Grassland in search of Swift Foxes, and I had Clif Bars for breakfast while driving.
We stopped and talked with a grader driver so see if he had seen any Swift Foxes recently. He gave us some locations of possible dens and where he had seen some photographers parked, and we went to check them out.
Shortly after leaving the grader driver, I spotted a Swift Fox by its den! It ran as we approached with the Jeep, and we weren't able to take any pictures of it. :( The den was in a pretty good location for photography though, and I was glad we had found an active den so quickly.
We continued driving around the Pawnee National Grassland in search of more Swift Foxes and we looked at the areas the grader driver recommended. We didn't see any other Swift Foxes, but we did find what looked to be some active dens.
We returned to the RV around 10:00. I called some physical Apple Stores because the iPad I helped my mother order won't ship for about two weeks — much longer than I was expecting based on the information on the Apple website when I ordered it. They wouldn't let me order one over the phone — I had to go to the store in person. :( I started to work up a blog entry.
I had a ham-and-Swiss sandwich for lunch around 11:45 that J made. I processed two more images for the blog, then finished the blog entry. I put ice on my right hand and did some computer work. I started our grill around 5:35, and the wind was blowing like crazy.
We had dinner around 6:30 because it took about 35 minutes to grill the chicken tenders. No, I didn't turn them into charcoal, the grill kept getting blown out, and I ended up repositioning the Jeep so one of its tires would be a better wind break. The chicken was good as were the sautéed zucchini and yellow squash that J prepared.
I put away the grill while J did the dishes, then we left in the Jeep around 7:00.
We checked the Swift Fox den where the fox was this morning, and at first we couldn't see anything. Then we moved to the top of a nearby hill to look around with binoculars, and saw a Swift Fox, probably at a nearby den. (Swift Foxes usually have more than one den site close to each other.) We moved back closer to the first den we found, and saw a Swift Fox resting next to it. We slowly moved the Jeep closer, and the Swift Fox got spooked and ran away a little, then sat and watched us for a while. J said it looked wise.
We returned to the RV around 8:30. I had some Asbach Uralt, and a little more than usual for medicinal purposes, while doing some computer work.
