February 20, 2010, a Saturday
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (Yaqui Well), California, USA
— Hiked Borrego Palm Canyon with J's brother R and family
C (J's brother R's wife) got up quietly and slipped outside around 6:30. Son-R (J's brother R's son) got up around 7:00 and went outside too. By that time J was awake, so we got up. I did my morning exercises while making coffee for C. J started cooking a big breakfast for everyone of made-to-order omelets, potatoes, and OJ, and I made some coffee for myself. (My AeroPress coffee maker makes one cup of coffee at a time.) R reported that his new bivi sack kept him nice a dry last night — an experiment he was glad to have tried here. Breakfast was delicious! We all loaded up in R&C's car and left around 10:40.

We went to the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Visitor Center and started hiking to Borrego Palm Canyon. J was quite disappointed that after 0.6 miles (1km) we came to the real trailhead for the hike. We headed up into the canyon, and J decided to stop in an area that desert bighorns frequent. It was was also a place where son-R had started to do some rock climbing, so J and son-R waited around there and R, C, and I continued up to the oasis — 1.5 mi (2.4km) from the trailhead. It was a nice hike, and it was even nicer because I had purposefully left my camera gear back at the RV. R, C, and I headed back down the trail to meet up with J and son-R who had had a nice time visiting. We all hiked back to the trailhead, and R and son-R continued hiking to the Visitor Center to get the car to pick up J, C, and I at the trailhead.

We went to Los Jilbertos in Borrego Springs for a late lunch around 2:20! R got J and I a glass of Horchata, a rice drink, to share. Neither J nor I had ever had it before, and it was tasty. The chips with pico de gallo were tasty, and the chicken enchiladas, that both J and I got, were OK.

We returned to the RV around 3:45. R took a nap in the car, son-R took a hike up to a nearby ridge, and C, J, and I visited for a while. R came in after his nap, and C napped in the RV. Son-R returned from his hike.

We had dinner around 7:00 of grilled hamburgers and cheeseburgers, baked beans that J kicked up a notch by adding freshly-sauteed onions and peppers and brown sugar, and potato chips — not quite as fancy as dinner last night.

R, C, and son-R left around 8:00. I worked up a blog entry, then went to bed.
