January 22, 2010, a Friday
Abiquiu Lake, New Mexico, USA
— Dumped using the macerater then watered at the Abiquiu Dam Visitor Center
I got out of bed around 6:40, and J had been out of bed for an hour or so — very unusual for her. (She had been awake since 4:00 because of some rain.) We turned on the generator at 6:50 for two hours. Our Inteli-Power PD9160A power converter (converts 110VAC to 12VDC) was only putting out about 22A into our house batteries, so I turned off the power converter, plugged the Charge Wizard back in, turned the power converter back on, then manually put the Charge Wizard into bulk mode. That got us about 30A into the house batteries. :) I did some computer work. We prepped the RV to move, then I cleaned off the slush from the roof of the RV. We left in the RV around 9:35 and ...

Went to the pit toilet in the campground. We set up the macerator, and dumped into the pit toilet. They have a regular dump station in the campground, but it's closed for the winter. It's so nice to have the Flojet Macerator Pump so we can dump just about anywhere now. We left around 10:25 and ...

Went to the Abiquiu Dam Visitor Center. J had called earlier today, and David Dutton, the Operations Manager, said we could get some water at the Visitor Center. David was very friendly, and the water faucet was convenient. After we had returned to our campsite, J discovered an interesting article by him: Just over 1 year ago, shots rang out ... (PDF).

We returned to the campsite around 11:20, just in time to start getting lots of solar-electric power.

I had lunch around 11:40, then worked up a blog entry. I looked at used Nikon 14-24 lenses for sale, and found one on FredMiranda.com. I checked Rob Galbraith then TheDigitalPicture.com for a review of the Canon EOS 1D Mk IV, and they didn't have any yet. Then I spent some time looking at the Canon lens quality test images on TheDigitalPicture.com. They are a really nifty, user-selectable, set of test images for almost all Canon lenses and some of the more popular third-party lenses for Canon bodies. The Canon TS-E 24mm f3.5 L Mk II is much better in the corners than the TS-E 24mm f3.5 L (Mk I) that I have (see the comparison here) and it's much, much better than the Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8 L USM (at 24mm) (see the comparison here). I really have to unload the 16-35!

I went outside around 1:10 to photograph the Townsend's solitaire that was still attacking our windows. It was using some different perches than before, and one was much better for photography (above left). Some other birds were coming and going in nearby junipers and pinon pines, so I started to track them down too. I was able to get some decent images of a pink-sided junco (above right), but the juniper titmouse eluded me.

I came back inside around 2:15 and brought the 16-35 with me so I can take pictures of it and then list it on eBay. I downloaded the images I just took, then downselected them first in iView then in Capture One (C1). It was snowing heavily around 4:05. I left in the Jeep around 4:30, after the snow squall ended, and ...

Went to our favorite area to photograph near Ghost Ranch. Some spots lit up as the sun poked through the clouds, but it didn't light up what I wanted to photograph. :(

I returned to the RV around 5:35.

We had dinner of steak fajitas, and I had half of the remaining huge slice of blueberry pie for dessert.

We turned the generator on at 7:45 for an our and a half. I processed two images for the blog and did some computer work.
