January 17, 2010, a Sunday
Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, Colorado, to Abiquiu Lake, New Mexico, USA
— Went to Abiquiu Lake for the first time
There was solid cloud cover when I got out of bed around 8:15, so I was glad I slept in. The weather forecast was for mostly cloudy today, and so far it was accurate. J made a big breakfast of Denver omelets, potatoes, and OJ. It was our first big breakfast in a long time, and it was nice to sit and relax for a while over breakfast. After we finished eating, I turned on the generator for an hour and then did the dishes. I did some computer work, then we prepped the RV to move. We took the RV to a faucet to load up on water. The lower threads were fouled, so we had to use our Water Thief to hook up the hose. We dumped the RV at the very nice dump station, then I hooked up the Jeep to tow. We left around 12:30.
I had some Clif Bars for lunch as we were driving. I've been enjoying the Blueberry Crisp bars for "dessert" after J found them at a good price (better than REI at least) at King Soopers.
We went to the McDonald's in Alamosa, Colorado, around 1:20 to borrow their Wi-Fi signal. It was slow, so we ...
Went to the Super 8, just down the road, around 1:30 to borrow their Wi-Fi signal. They had a wonderful Wi-Fi connection. J left on foot around 2:50 to go to the nearby City Market (a Kroger affiliate) to do some grocery shopping while I finished doing some computer work. I left around 3:20 and ...
Went to the Loaf N Jug to fill up the RV with gas at $2.699/gal using a 3¢ discount from our King Soopers (Kroger) club card.
I pulled over into the City Market parking lot next door around 3:30 to pick up J. We left around 3:40 and took US-285 south out of town.
The cloud layer broke and there was some wonderful warm light.
We stopped around 4:20 for a cow giving birth near the road. J got out to photograph it, and I just watched. The cow I had seen as we were driving by had her calf's feet sticking out of her, and she was trying to adopt a calf that was just born to another cow. After a while, the rancher came out and separated the mother-to-be from the mother so the mother and just-born calf could bond. We left around 4:40.
We entered New Mexico at 4:50. There was a nice bank of clouds as we were passing San Antonio Mountain. We were tempted to stop, but by the time the clouds started to light up, some low hills had gotten in the way, so we just kept heading south. We turned north on US-84.
We reached Abiquiu Lake at 6:35. It's a U.S. Army Corps of Engineer facility, and camping is free in the winter because there are no services. We occupied Site 4. It was really dark with just a sliver of a moon setting, and the sky was full of stars!
We had dinner around 7:10 of J's minestrone soup with brie, salami, and crackers from Trader Joe's.
After I finished the dishes, I turned on the generator for an hour — the cloudy days haven't been very good for generating solar-electric power. I went online through the nice fast Verizon wireless signal. :) We watched an episode of Desperate Housewives on DVD, then I did some more computer work.
