November 27, 2009, a Friday
Tucson (BLM), Arizona, to Pancho Villa State Park, New Mexico, USA
— Ran errands and moved to a new location
We took it easy this morning because we weren't going to go to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum today and we'd only have a short distance to drive this afternoon after doing some errands. I had my normal breakfast, and did some computer work. We prepped the RV to move, then I stowed the solar-electric panels. We left our boondocking spot at 11:08 and stopped to hook up the Jeep to tow before getting on the main road. We got underway at 11:16.
We stopped at a Gas City near I-19 to load up the RV and Jeep with gas at $2.379/gal. We also loaded up on propane. We left at 11:52.
We stopped at a Fry's grocery store on our way to Camping World. I dropped off J so she could go in to buy a discounted pie and ...
I went next door to a Verizon Wireless store to check out a Motorola Droid phone. I've been thinking about getting a new smart phone to replace my Palm Treo 755p, and the Droid looks like a good option. It has the latest version of the Android operating system, a slide-out keyboard, and Google Navigation at no charge. The iPhone, when it becomes available with Verizon, is another option, but I don't like the on-screen keyboard, and Google Navigation, at least with AT&T, is an extra option, i.e. more $$$ per month. I picked up the Droid model on the display stand, and it felt cheap. The screen was also locked up, so I asked a salesman. He said it wasn't a real phone, then went to the counter and got me a real Droid to play with. It felt nice and solid and the keyboard worked fine for me. (Some people say the top row of keys is too close to the screen.) The web browser was fast and the display was sharp. It doesn't have the cool "pinch"-to-zoom feature of the iPhone, but it does have touch-based scrolling. I'll have to see if someone has written an app that will mimic the Palm Notes program so that I can import my log. I'll also have to wait until Missing Sync for Android is available so I can sync it with my Mac.
I went over to Fry's, and J was still shopping. They didn't have any discounted pies, but she was picking up other things. We left at 12:31.
We went to Beaudry RV, next to Camping World, at 12:39 to dump and take on fresh water. We left at 1:03.
We went to Busy Bubble Coin Laundry at 1:09. We put in the laundry, then I had lunch and started to work up a blog entry. We finished doing the laundry and left at 2:50.
We went by a Chevron selling gas at $2.339/gal. :(
We went to a WalMart at 3:07 to look for a discounted pie and also to get some Clif Bars. The last two WalMarts we went to didn't have the box of six Chocolate Peanut Crunch bars, and I was getting low on them. This WalMart didn't have any discounted pies, and in fact had sold out of pecan and pumpkin. They did have the Clif Bars I was looking for though. :) We left at 3:24, and started heading to Patagonia.
We went by an Arco selling gas at $2.319/gal! :( We got in I-10 heading east at 3:47. We talked about our plan to go to Patagonia tonight, and decided not to go there. The weather wasn't going to be too good this weekend, and the elegant trogon we were hoping to see hadn't been mentioned on the Arizona birding list for the last few days. We decided to head to Pancho Villa State Park, New Mexico, and we'd get in really late — instead of about an hour, it would be about four hours to our destination. :( I listened to an episode of Car Talk. We entered New Mexico at 5:51.
We stopped at the Super 8 parking lot in Lordsburg at 6:15, and there was no Wi-Fi signal. We went across the street to the Best Western paring lot, and they had a good Wi-Fi signal. :) J started uploading images to her website and I worked on a blog entry.
We had dinner at 6:35 of open-faced hot chicken sandwiches with gravy and leftover green bean casserole. We had some of J's carrot cake for dessert.
I finished the text for the blog entry, then processed four images to go with it. We left around 8:40.
We decided not to take the back way to Pancho Villa State Park and instead stayed on I-10 until Deming.
We reached Pancho Villa State Park at 10:17. I unhooked the Jeep while J pulled up a map of the campground. Then I took the Jeep to go look for a site. We occupied Site 59, a site without electricity, and were leveled by 10:44. We crashed.

Gas is fully a dollar cheaper there than here. Sent the 500 to the Doctor Friday. Hope it is one of those 7 day turnarounds they tout. Enjoying the blog as always D |

J said you paid a pretty penny to send it too, Doug. Hope they can fix it for you in a timely manner. Give Tootie a scratch behind the ear for me. |
