October 17, 2009, a Saturday
Idaho Springs (TMG) to Roosevelt National Forest (Laramie River Rd), Colorado, USA
— Sat at The Majestic Gallery then took care of a propane emergency
Had my normal breakfast, then plugged the RV into an outlet inside The Majestic Gallery. It was a good thing we hadn't tried plugging in last night because I couldn't get the back door of the gallery to close all of the way with the extension cord running through it. I photographed the items I'm going to eBay: Canon EOS 1Ds Mk II, Epson P-4000, Giotto MH-1000 ball head with a Kirk quick-release top, Kirk L-bracket for the 1Ds Mk II, and Kirk single-arm macro bracket. A minute or so before the eBay auctions were to end, I bid on two different adaptor rings for a Lee Filters Foundation Kit (a filter holder for 100mm square filters), and lost both. Then I bid on a Lee Filters Foundation Kit on auction by the same seller as the adaptor rings, and won. I was able to get it for free because I had gotten so many eBay bucks from my purchase of the Canon EOS 1Ds Mk III. :) I started to process the images I took this morning.

I opened up The Majestic Gallery at 10:55, then continued processing the images I took this morning. Yes, I did the processing on just my MacBook Pro because the exposure and color accuracy didn't have to be spot on for the auction images.

J's brother, R, and father, F, arrived around 12:55. R had just flown in from California, and F, who lives in the Denver area, picked him up. They were on their way to Glennwood Hot Springs for the weekend, and it was great that we could spend some time together. J, R, and F went to the Tommyknocker Brewery at the other end of the historic downtown to get takeaway to bring back to the gallery. The burgers were rather plain and didn't include the usual lettuce, tomato, and onion that comes with them when they're served at the brewpub. :( R and F left, and I went back to processing the images I took this morning. I discovered that I included a manual for a Canon EOS 1D Mk III in the photo of miscellaneous items included with the 1Ds Mk II. I hope none of my potential buyers notices the discrepancy, and I also hope that I can find the 1Ds Mk II manual! After processing all of the images, I worked up the ads for eBay, then I posted the ads. It was nice to get all of that done today! Then I started to look for a place where we could get our RV propane tank filled. I had wanted to fill it before coming up to Idaho Springs, but our time got filled with other activities. I closed up the gallery around 5:02, then took care of some gallery business.

I started to fill the RV fresh water tank with water from the Gallery's bathroom, and I used our Water Thief to attach the hose to the sink faucet. I had to hold the Water Thief on the faucet because the water pressure would have pushed it off. It was a slow process to fill the tank because I couldn't open up the faucet very far because the Water Thief would spray water around the faucet if too much water pressure was applied. :( After I filled the water tank, I checked the gauge on the RV propane tank, and it was showing "E" — not good. Our inside remote indicator showed that it went below 1/3 yesterday, so I thought we'd have a couple of days left. J helped me look for a place to have the propane tank filled tonight. She found a place in Walden that could do it, but we weren't planning to be up there until tomorrow night. Because that was the only place we could find, we decided to make the approximately 2.5-hour drive up there tonight so we'd have enough propane to run the furnace and refrigerator through the night. I backed the RV out from behind the gallery onto the street, then hooked up the Jeep to tow. We left at 6:51.

I had two Clif Bars as an appetizer while driving, and J had some of her fresh-cooked stew at the dinette.

We stopped around 8:45 to check the lug nuts on the left-rear wheels of the RV. We had driven about 125 mi (200km) since we had the new tires put on all around, and I was growing quite anxious to check the lugs as we were driving on the winding mountain roads. I checked just the lugs on the left-rear wheels because that's where we're missing a hubcap. Two of the eight lugs required just a little tightening, so I figured that the other wheels were probably OK too for the approximately 60 more miles (96km) until Walden and propane.

We reached Corkel Oil in Walden around 9:30. J had called the guy as we were entering town, and he was waiting at the propane tank when we pulled in. We got the propane tank filled, then I had a bowl of J's beef stew. Then I checked all of the RV wheel lugs, and only a handful required some tightening. We left at 9:55 and headed southeast towards Gould.

We were heading to a favorite boondocking spot on the Laramie River Road in the Roosevelt National Forest to photograph moose. It's just north of Rocky Mountain National Park and near where moose were reintroduced to Colorado in 1978. We had had great success finding and photographing moose around there in September of 2007 and 2008 (below).

We were both startled to see a cow moose right at the side of the road shortly before reaching Gould. While we wanted to find moose in the area, we didn't really want to find one right on the white line at the side of the road as we were driving the RV and towing at about 55mph (90kph) in the dark. Fortunately, the moose started running away from us and not onto the road! We went over Cameron Pass (10,276 ft, 3132m) around 10:35.

We reached our favorite boondocking spot on the Laramie River Road in the Roosevelt National Forest around 11:05 — the end of a very exciting day.
