S of Tok to Valdez, Alaska, USA
— Great scenery on the way to Valdez
We took it easy this morning after pushing ourselves yesterday. We had a big breakfast of Denver omeletes, potatoes, OJ, and coffee/tea. J spilled the package of shredded cheese all over the sink area and floor. Prepped the RV and got underway at 10:44.
We continued heading south on the Tok Cutoff. There was bright overcast with a hint of smoke. Got onto the Richardson Highway heading south at 12:16.
We stopped at a bank in Glennallen, then went to the Post Office. Had lunch, then tried to go online through the WiFi at the Copper Valley Library. It didn't look like they had a real connection to the net, so we left at 1:50.
We went by lots of high waterfalls as we got to the mountains on this side of Valdez. Went by a potential boondocking spot near the Worthington Glacier. Went over Thompson Pass (2678 ft, 816m) at 3:43. As we went by Blueberry Lake, J said she had photographed trumpeter swans there on her previous visit to Alaska. We started heading into clouds part way down the mountain, and it started raining heavily at 3:50. By Bridal Veil Falls at 3:59.
We got to Valdez at 4:23, and J went into the visitor center as I went online using my USB stick. The connection was really slow. J came back with news about where to get open wireless networks and places to boondock in town. :)
We tried the wireless internet from the library parking lot. We could get on their router, but not onto the net, so I went to go inside and ask if their net connection was up. They had a sign on the door that said their wireless internet was unavailable — no wonder we couldn't get online.
We went over to the parking lot of the Keystone Hotel, and they had a very nice open network! :) I was able to finish some tasks online.
Then we went to check out one of the boondocking spots that was recommended, and it looked perfect.
We went back downtown in the RV to dump at the Tesoro at 6:00. J went online through the open wireless network that belonged to the Eagle's Rest RV Park next door, and it was a fast connection. After I finished dumping and loading up on water, I also went online to take advantage of the great net connection.
We had dinner there of Bear Creek Potato Soup and watermelon. J loves having soup for dinner, but I prefer having soup and a sandwich or something else that I can sink my teeth into. I did the dishes, and the soup that was left in the pot had started to set up like wallpaper paste — gotta love the stuff. :)
I worked on this website some more. We left the Tesoro and the free WiFi at 9:28.
We set up camp at the great bondocking site in town, then J made some Pillsbury Peanut Butter cookies for dessert. I edited images from yesterday.
