July 21, 2009, a Tuesday

— Alaska Highway Day 14: Side trip along the Haines Highway
Had a quick breakfast (read "some handfuls of trail mix") and made coffee to go. Right now, that means Nescafe instant coffee. We left in the Jeep at 7:50.

We headed south on the Haines Highway to look for wildlife. We stopped for a flagman at a construction area. While waiting for the pilot car, I saw in the rear view mirror a black bear crossing the road about 100 yds behind us. Because we were last in line, I turned around to go investigate. By the time we were pointed the right way, the bear was starting to go into the tall brush never to be seen again. :( We went back and waited for the pilot car. The Jeep got some nice dirty spray from the cars ahead of us driving through the wet-down dirt road through the construction area. Kluane National Park borders the southwest side of the road, and the scenery was very nice south of the construction area: mountains, lakes, and large patches of fireweed. We turned around at 8:50 after not seeing any photographable wildlife. We stopped for a porcupine by the side of the road at 9:25, and it scampered into the tall grass before we came to a complete stop. We waited a bit, but it didn't show up again so we left.

We stopped at the Kathleene Lake day use area, and I read the info signs about the Kokanee salmon which are Sockeye salmon that no longer return to the ocean for part of heir life cycle.

We got back to the RV at 10:15. Worked on blog entries.

Had lunch of my usual at 12:35. Worked on more bog entries.

Dinner at 5:50 of Oliver's Creations Gourmet Roasted Garlic and Asiago Ravioli with Oliver's Gourmet Rosé Picante sauce. Very tasty! The Greek salad was good too, complete with Kalamata olives. Did the dishes.

We left in the Jeep at 6:50 to head south on the Haines Highway to look for wildlife again. We didn't have to stop for a flagman this time because they stopped working at 5:30.

We came across a young black bear around 6:55. We set up to photograph it from the car, and by the time we were ready, the bear had crossed the road. The bear went into the woods when a loud truck went by as we were approaching. We waited for the bear to come back, but it kept heading into the woods, so we left without getting off a shot. :(

We turned around at 7:47.

We went all the way into Haines Junction to get some gas in the Jeep at the Fas Gas.

Back to the RV. Had some vanilla ice cream for dessert. Made some modifications to this site.
