July 19, 2009, a Sunday
Whitehorse (Inland Kenworth), Yukon Territory, Canada
— Alaska Highway Day 12: Stuck in Whitehorse
Had a regular breakfast, which for me is raisin bran and coffee. Ordinarily, I have Post raisin bran, but I haven't been able to find it in Canada, so I've been having either Kellogg's (egads!) or the local store brand. What one does when one travels. :) E, J's daughter, called just as J was getting in the shower, so I talked with her for a while. J called her back when she got out of the shower, then I cut J's hair — the first time it had been cut since we moved into the RV. I worked on this website some more and J processed images.
Shortly after lunch, I had this website all ready to go. All I had to do was upload things to the server and then take it live — whoopee!!! I started to flesh out some blog entries. There was a ground squirrel out in the parking lot that "jumped" every time is started to go somewhere after prairie-dogging — funny! I got the vacuum cleaner out of a basement compartment and vacuumed out the RV. Looked for a place to eat in town, then left in the Jeep at 6:40.
We had a very nice dinner at Giorgio's Cuccina, an Italian restaurant near downtown. We split a Baby Greens & Walnut Salad, then split a Shrimp & Chicken with Penne. Both were very tasty, and it was good we split the main — it was plenty big. We split a piece of odd Tiramisu for dessert. It had a lemon/orange flavor to it and J thought she tasted coconut. I became a Tiramisu connoiseur, or maybe it's "snob," while in Italy, and most versions of Tiramisu outside Italy are poor imatations of the "real thing."
After dinner, we walked along the Yukon River which flows right by town. In the early days before roads, the Yukon River was a major transportation corridor. A bald eagle flew high over the river. We turned around after looking at the outside of the SS Klondike, a 1929/37 stern-wheeler that would rival anything on the Mississippi. It's now a National Historic Site operated by Parks Canada.
We stopped at the Real Canadian Superstore to do some grocery shopping. The store was similar to a super WalMart, but they had a much better selection of specialty food and it was on the dumpy side. J liked this place much more than the Extra Value place where we had gone the other day.
We went back to the RV and I worked on blog entries.
