July 8, 2009, a Wednesday
Dawson Creek (WalMart) to Wonowon, British Columbia, Canada
— On the Alaska Highway
Took the RV to Gear-O-Rama at 8:20 am, just slightly before the 8:30 that the service technician recommended yesterday afternoon. Oddly, the gate was closed, so we sat and waited. The gate was unlocked at 8:25, but the front door was still locked, so we waited some more. After the front door was unlocked, I went in and waited for someone to show up at the service desk — odd. The service technician who finally took care of me wasn't happy that the Ford dealer dumped the fuel pressure problem on them because he didn't like to be a "parts changer."

We had breakfast at the Voyageur Inn on the S side of town. We chose it because the parking lot was full as we were driving around. The Le's Special Omelette (Bacon, Sausage, Ham, Mushrooms, Green Onions and Cheese) was tasty, and the blueberry jam on the brown toast was good too. It was nice to go out for breakfast, something we don't do very often.

We went by the Dawson Creek Public Library, and it was closed. Odd — the sign said they open at 9:30, and it was 9:30.

We took the Jeep to the Lubex for an oil change. They had a neat setup where we stayed in the Jeep while one service guy did stuff on the top while another service guy did stuff on the bottom from a below-floor access trough.

We went back to the Dawson Creek Public Library at 10:27, and it was still closed, but there were people inside now. Uh, I checked my cell phone, and Dawson Creek is actually on Pacific Time, and we had been operating on Mountain Time. No wonder things were closed when they were supposed to be open. :) We waited until they opened the door, then we went in and made ourselves at home starting by going online through their free wireless internet connection. The Gear-O-Rama guy called to say the only thing we needed was new rear brakes. They couldn't find anything wrong with the fuel pressure, so it was probably just a temporary problem. (The check engine light hadn't come on after it was reset yesterday afternoon either.) I started to read through our new copy of The Milepost - Since 1949, The Bible of North Country Travel. It provides a mile-by-mile description of the major highways in northern BC and Alberta, the Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories, and Alaska. One of the things I especially like is a travel map that shows the whole area. I had used The Milepost for my previous drives to Alaska, but I had tossed it prior to moving into the RV.

To A&W for lunch. I don't think I've ever had a meal at an A&W before, but the bacon cheeseburger was rather tasty.

Back to the Dawson Creek Public Library around 12:30 (real local time). Finished going through The Milepost for the Alaska Highway, then worked on my photography website a bit. Listened to some audio CDs from the library while we were there.

We picked up the RV from Gear-O-Rama around 4:40. The guy said the RV was in great shape and we were good to go.

Loaded up the RV at the Husky before heading out of town.

Uh, the RV drive train was still making an odd sound. :(

Stopped at a KFC in Fort St. John around 6:30 for dinner. J loves KFC. We got takeout and ate in the RV in their parking lot.

Found a good boondocking spot in Wonowon next to the Blueberry Gas/Motel place around 8:20.
