August 3, 2010, a Tuesday
near Red Feather Lakes, Colorado, USA
— Breakfast in town and explored the area some more
I got up around my normal time and did some computer work until J got up. We prepped our computers to go and left in the Jeep around 9:10.
We looked for a place to have breakfast in Red Feather Lakes and ended up at the Pot Belly Deli & Bar. We were the only ones there for breakfast, but had seen lots of people there for dinner before. We each had a Mile-High Omelet, but J had whole-wheat toast and I had sourdough. We enjoyed watching the Broad-Tailed Hummingbirds at a feeder right outside the window — both males and females. The omelets were great, and J really liked the potatoes. We left around 10:30.
We went to the Red Feather Lakes Post Office to mail some things and buy stamps, then we ...
Went to Dowdy Lake to look around. It's too developed for landscape photography, but there were lots of nice wildflowers around. It was too windy to photograph, so we just looked.
We went to the Red Feather Lakes Community Library around 11:05, shortly after they opened, to use their free Wi-Fi. I started to upload my blurred background images to PEPhoto.com because J found out that they have even cheaper 20x30 matte prints than EZPrints.com. After the images were uploaded, I tried to order some 20x20 matte prints, and there was only an option for luster or glossy. I called them to find out how to get a matte print, and they said that the "luster" selection is really "matte." That didn't give me a warm fuzzy so I started uploading the images to EZPrints.com. After they finished uploading, I ordered some 20x30 matte prints — what a hassle. Along the way, I worked up a blog entry and did some computer work.
I went out to the Jeep around 1:15 to have lunch of Clif Bars, and it had jut started to rain.
I went back inside the library and did some more things online until we were both ready to leave. We left around 2:30 and walked ...
To the Red Feather Trading Post. J wanted to pick up more sugar because our hummingbirds have been eating us out of house and home! It was a great general store, and we also picked up some heavy-duty tent stakes to use to secure our Plamps in the ground. We left around 3:00.
On our way back to the RV, we stopped to photograph a Pinedrops (left). They're cool little parasitic plants that don't have any chlorophyl and instead live in association with fungi that break down dead vegetation. We also photographed some other wildflowers there too.
We returned to the RV around 4:15. I did some computer work while downloading the images from this afternoon, then I started to downselect them in Capture One (C1) while fixing dinner.
We had dinner at 5:40 of Bertolli Tuscan-Style Braised Beef with Gold Potatoes. I had forgotten that this flavor was good right out of the bag, and kicked it up a notch by adding some garlic powder, salt, and fresh-cracked pepper. It was delicious.
J did the dishes, then we left in the Jeep around 6:20 to go looking for moose.
Our waitress at breakfast and a Forest Service Ranger at the library had both recommended the same area as a good place to see moose, so we headed there. We didn't see any, but saw lots of wildflowers, including species we hadn't seen before. Unfortunately, it was too windy to photograph them, so we'll have to return when the conditions are good.
We returned to the RV around 7:35 because dark clouds were approaching, and it started raining by 7:45. I downselected the images from this afternoon some more, then tried to ID the species that were new to me. I couldn't ID one tiny yellow flower. :(
