— Photographed Swift Foxes and saw the vixen
We slept later than usual this morning. When we awoke, there was a light solid cloud layer which would be great for mammal photography. The wind was calm too which would be great great for Swift Foxes. I made instant coffee to go and J started a mug of tea steeping.
We entered the blind around 7:20, and the Swift Fox vixen was out (below left)! We hadn't seen her yet during this visit, and it was great to know she was still alive. She stayed around for a while, then left to hunt while the kits stayed around the den area and practiced hunting insects (below right). The little Swift Fox kits remind me a lot of cats by the way they hunt, and the kits are about the right size for a cat too. I had Clif Bars for breakfast during a break in the action. The clouds started to break up, and then the wind started to pick up and all of the kits went down into the den. We waited a little while then left.
We returned to the RV around 9:50. I downloaded the images from this morning then downselected them in iView. Then I downselected the images from last night in Capture One (C1) — a long and arduous task because I had taken so many images.
I had lunch around 12:25 and read more of the June Outdoor Photographer. I processed four images for the blog then worked up a blog entry. J resized all of the images that she had given my mother for her Sony DPF-D70 7-inch digital photo frame so they'd be the right size for her iPad, then I did the same for the images I had given her while J started to cook dinner. I used iTunes to move the pictures to the iPad, and they looked great.
We had dinner around 5:40 of Pork Marsala, garlic mashed potatoes, and green beans. The pork Marsala was excellent! I probably wouldn't have been able to tell the pork from veal in a side-by-side taste test. The biggest problem with dinner was the amount of dishes I had to do, but it as worth it!
We entered the blind around 6:25. There were no Swift Foxes, but the herd of free-range cows was hanging around near the blind, and a bull was out. The bull was snorting in our direction, and its call reminded me of a bull elk during the rut. The bull kept wandering closer and closer to the blind, and its snorting was a bit unsettling. He eventually stopped snorting and changed direction, and the cows moved away from the den.
The Swift Fox kits started coming out of their den around 6:45. They mostly hunted for insects and rested. We left after the sun went behind a dark cloud to the west.
We returned to the RV around 8:10. I downloaded the images I took tonight and then downselected them in iView. Then I downselected all of the images I took today in Capture One (C1) before going to bed.
