June 17, 2010, a Thursday
Pawnee National Grassland, Colorado, USA
— Photographed Swift Fox Kits

Blue-Cheese Burgers

  • 1 1/4 lb ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • Heinz 57 sauce
  • worcestershire sauce
  • garlic salt or Lawry's seasoning
  • crushed, dried red pepper seasoning
  • blue cheese crumbles
Recipe adapted from SilJ (J's son-in-law J).
When we awoke, a strong wind was blowing as forecast, so we decided to take it easy this morning. I started to work up a blog entry while J cooked us a big breakfast of cheese omelets, potatoes, and OJ. I had a cup of LavAzza Qualita Rossa Coffee and J had a mug of Lucile's tea, and it was nice to relax over breakfast. After I did the dishes, ...

I went outside and reattached the carpet on the lower step of the RV using the stovepipe wire I picked up yesterday. The steel stovepipe wire was much better than the aluminum wire I had used before. The aluminum wire was very brittle and tended to snap even after bending it sharply just once, and the steel stovepipe wire was quite forgiving. Not only that, but the black stovepipe wire really disappears into the dark gray carpet whereas the shiny aluminum wire really stood out. Because the stovepipe wire worked so well, I replaced the tie-wraps that had been holding the carpet to the top step with the stovepipe wire.

I came back inside the RV and finished the blog entry.

I had lunch around 12:30 and read some of the June Outdoor Photographer. The strong wind stopped by 12:50. I did some computer work, and the wind picked up again by 2:30. I continued to do some computer work, and J made some blue-cheese hamburger patties. The wind died down again around 4:25.

We went out to the blind around 5:15 and four kits were out. We photographed them for a while, then they all went into the den. We waited, and they all came back out in about 10 minutes. Unfortunately, they spent most of their time in some really tall grass, and we couldn't photograph them much. They disappeared back into the den for about half an hour then came back.

This time they spent more time where we could photograph them. They also ranged further from the den than we had seen them do before, and they practiced hunting insects. We didn't see the vixen, and we haven't seen her since returning to the Pawnee three days ago, so we started to wonder if she's still alive. The kits were still out after the den was in shade as the sun was setting, and because we had gotten so many good images already, we decided to pack it up for the day.

We returned to the RV around 8:30 and I started the grill. I downloaded the images I took tonight then grilled the burgers and cooked a veggie.

We had dinner around 9:00 of the grilled blue-cheese cheeseburgers (with Colby/Jack on top) and Green Giant Steamers Basil Vegetables.

J did the dishes while I put away the grill. I downselected the images I took tonight in iView before going to bed.

The secret of the hamburgers is to brush the patties with melted butter right as they go on the grill. SilJ, however, forgot about this step and hasn't done it for several years now.
