April 6, 2010, a Tuesday
Chiricahuas (Sunny Flat), Arizona, USA
— Photographed in the Chiricahuas
I had my normal breakfast then worked up a blog entry. We left around 8:20 in the Jeep.
We went to Dave Jasper's place. He has several feeders set up in his back yard and invites birders to enjoy the birds that are attracted to them. White-Crowned Sparrows (near left) were everywhere and House Finch were common. We also saw Northern Cardinal, Scott's Oriole, Pyrrhuloxia, Gambel's Quail, Black-Throated Sparrow, Curve-Billed Thrasher, Canyon Towhee, Green-Tailed Towhee, Ladder-Backed Woodpecker (far left), and a Yuma Antelope Squirrel (below). The environment was a bit messy for photography and the the light would be better in the afternoon.
We went to the Portal Cafe & Lodge around 11:45 for lunch and internet. I had a Grilled Chicken Sandwich and J got a Reuben. The internet connection went down before we were done, and I wasn't able to get the blog entry uploaded. :( We split an Apple Cobbler with vanilla ice cream for dessert.
We went to the Portal Library around 1:00 to use their Wi-Fi. They had a nice fast connection, but their setup prevented us from checking our email with our usual laptop-based mail programs and also from FTPing which I need to do to upload blog entries. :( We were limited to just surfing the web and downloading software updates. We left at 3:00 when the library closed.
We went back to the Portal Cafe & Lodge to try their Wi-Fi one more time, and their internet connection was still down. :(
We went to the South Fork Picnic area to look for an Elegant Trogon. Before setting out, we stopped to photograph some curious Mexican Jays (left). We walked upstream along the South Fork of Cave Creek and didn't see the Elegant Trogon. I think we were a bit early in the season for it to be there, although the librarian at the Portal Library said someone had heard one in that area yesterday.
We returned to the RV around 5:30. I downloaded the images I took then downselected them in iView then in Capture One (C1).
We had dinner around 7:00 of the leftover pizza from five nights ago for me and a good salad for both of us.
After dinner I had some Harvey's Bristol Cream — everyone knows that sherry is a perfect after dinner drink when having pizza. :) I processed four images for the blog then did some computer work before going to bed.

Thanks for your comments, D. I thought you'd enjoy seeing all of the little flitty birds. Maybe you guys can join us down here next year. I'm sure you'll really enjoy Texas. I've been looking over J's shoulder at posts from people already there. |
