February 26, 2010, a Friday
Joshua Tree National Park (Jumbo Rock), California, USA
— Photographed in Joshua Tree National Park
I got up early and J stayed in bed. I grabbed some trail mix for a quick breakfast and left by myself in the Jeep at 6:40.
I stopped near the entrance of the campground and hiked in to photograph a boulder that I found yesterday (below left). The thin cloud layer, with nice diffuse light, was perfect for this composition.
Then I went to the Split Rock Picnic Area and hiked in among the rock formations. I discovered a nice small arch (above right), and was able to find a decent composition that didn't include any of the boring sky. On my way back to the Jeep, I happened to look up and behind me at the rock formation that first caught my attention in the area, and saw some interesting clouds (left).
I returned to the RV around 8:50 and downloaded the images I took while J made us a big breakfast of scrambled eggs and potatoes. It was great to relax over the nice breakfast after a fun morning out shooting. :)
After I did the dishes, I downselected the images from two days ago in Capture One (C1) and then processed three images for the blog. Then I worked up a blog entry.
I had lunch around 12:20 of Genoa salami and Swiss on the delicious Chompie's Original New York Deli Seedless Rye bread. I selected and processed two images from yesterday for the blog, then started to work up a blog entry. We left at 2:15 in the Jeep.
We drove towards Twentynine Palms and stopped when we had a good Verizon Wireless signal so we could go online. I uploaded the blog entry for two days ago then finished the blog entry for yesterday. G&L-N and G&L-O stopped on their way into the park! B&J, who were following in their own vehicle, stopped too, and I met them for the first time. After a short visit, they left to go photograph, and we finished doing things online.
We returned to the RV around 4:00, and I changed into hiking/photography clothes. We left in the Jeep at 4:05.
We went to the Skull Rock parking area, and J photographed me on Skull Rock. Then we went our own way to photograph the rock formations in the area. I spent most of my time on the north side of the road. I loved the waves in the base layer of rock in the image to the left, and it took lots of searching to find a composition that worked,
We returned to the RV at 5:55 and coyotes were howling in the distance. I made a Greek-like salad while J heated up leftover grilled chicken and rice.
We had dinner at 6:20, and it was tasty.
After I did the dishes, I made a batch of my balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Then I made two batches of J's Bean Salad for our picnic tomorrow. I made two batches instead of one double batch so that I could put each batch in its own gallon-sized (3.8l) Ziplock bag to make it easier to fit in the refrigerator. Then I had some Asbach Uralt while downselecting the images from today in Capture One (C1). Then I processed four images for the blog.
