October 4, 2009, a Sunday
Glacier National Park (Many Glacier), Montana, USA
— A cloudy snowy day in the RV
[You may view a map of Glacier National Park in PDF format.]

We slept really well in the quiet campground. :) It was snowing and 30°F (-1°C) when we got out of bed. I turned on our Olympian Wave 3 Catalytic Heater for the first time this season. We have a furnace in the RV, but it's not terribly efficient. First, a lot of the heat just goes out the flue without heating the RV, and second, the fan uses electricity. The catalytic heater doesn't have these problems because it's mounted right in our kitchen (all of the heat starts in the living area of the RV) and there's no fan. However, we do have to crack a window and a roof vent to get fresh air for it, so we do lose some heat that way. J really likes the Wave 3 because she can stand right in front of it to warm up quickly. I started my morning routine of exercises and making coffee, and J started making us a big breakfast of Denver omelets, hash browns, and OJ. It was nice to chat and relax over breakfast.

After I cleaned up the kitchen, I went to register for another night because the weather was supposed to clear the following day. I also noted the generator hours: 8-10, noon-2, and 5-7. It was snowing heavily, and I came back with a nice dusting of snow on my clothes.

I did some computer work. Turned on the generator at 12:20 because our batteries were down to about half capacity. It's not good to drain batteries below about 75%, and we don't like to go below about 50%. However, by draining them more, they will take a charge faster, so we like to drain them to about 50% before turning on the generator, and we only charge them for an hour or two at a time which brings them up to maybe 35%.

Had my normal lunch and continued doing computer work. Turned off the generator at 1:50. J left around 3:05 to go photograph. It was still dull with light snow, and I passed, especially because J said she wanted to photograph any potential wildlife from the car, and she wanted to have the heat turned way up. I don't understand her! When I get dressed to photograph in the cold, I put on enough clothes to be comfortable when standing around outside. When I get in a vehicle, I usually have the heat turned on just slightly to take off the chill, but J likes to have the inside of the car around 65°F (18°C) and I have to shed almost all of my clothes. If we come across any wildlife to photograph, then it takes a while for me to get suited up again out in the cold. And, I have to deal with my own personal freeze-thaw cycle caused by sweating in the car followed by freezing when I suit up.

I started to make dinner of my special spaghetti sauce. This time I started with a jar of Ragú Rich & Thick Roasted Garlic spaghetti sauce because we couldn't get my usual Ragú Chunky Tomato, Garlic & Onion spaghetti sauce last time we grocery shopped. Then I added some cooked ground beef from when I made my chili, and added more herbs and spices.

I resumed my computer work. J returned around 3:55, and didn't see any wildlife when she was gone. I showered. Turned the generator on at 5:02 because it had been cloudy all day — lousy for generating solar-electric power. J showered. Turned off the generator at 7:00.

Had dinner at 7:05 of spaghetti and Texas Toast. I thought the Ronzoni Healthy Harvest Whole Wheat Blend Pasta was odd, but J really liked it. Both of us agreed that the sauce was good.

Did some more computer work before bed.

Good Morning Friends; Just getting caught up on the blog. Have been pretty busy since my buddy arrived Friday. Had some good days and some bad ones with the moose and weather. Back in the clouds and a bit of rain this morning so I think we will head up into hatcher and shoot water.
James do i note you are shooting more landscapes?
Good to catch up with you. Go Safe

Yes, Doug, I have been shooting more landscapes lately. We haven't been seeing much wildlife, and it's easier now to get early and late light.

Say "Hi" to F, RA, and Tootie for me.
