July 11, 2009, a Saturday
W of Stone Mountain Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada
— Alaska Highway Day 4: Foggy Morning, Moosie Evening
Had a very quick breakfast and made coffee to go.
We headed east in the Jeep back into Stone Mountain Provincial Park. A stone sheep ewe and lamb were on the shoulder at the usual stone sheep location. However, they were very skittish and started heading up the hill while we were still in the Jeep. They didn't stop until they were too high up to get any good shots. :( We continued heading towards Summit Lake, and stopped to shoot a mother and calf caribou in the fog. The setting wasn't quite right, so I didn't get anything I was happy with. However, the fog was very interesting among the evergreens (left).
Back to the RV around 8:40. Had a big breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast. Yes, toast out in the boonies. While the toaster sucks a lot of amps, the time it takes to make toast doesn't take many Ah, so it's no big deal to run it off the batteries. Did the dishes. Worked on setting up this blog site. Started to select images to submit to another photo contest.
Lunch at 12:45 of my usual ham and Swiss cheese sandwich on rye with Grey Poupon Country Dijon mustard, a lass of Coka Cola Classic, a banana, and a red delicious apple. It started raining with big rain drops by 2:25 shortly after I had gone out to close the Jeep windows because it looked like it was going to rain. We got pea-sized hail around 2:40. Worked on setting up this blog site.
Dinner of a bargain-brand rising crust pizza with dessert of J's freshly-made blueberry crisp. I love just about everything blueberry: pie, crisp, muffins, ... — mmm.
We left in the Jeep to go exploring around 7:40 and headed back into Stone Mountain Provincial Park. We stopped to photograph a very cooperative young bull moose that was drinking from the puddles at a turnoff. He must have been enjoying some salt because there was plenty of fresh water nearby he could have chosen instead. We also photographed some woodland caribou right near there.
We left the moose and started to head back to the RV. We came upon a stone sheep ewe and lamb at their usual hangout, and this time we were able to photograph them before they disappeared. It wasn't a very satisfying encounter though. As we were about to leave, I spotted some stone sheep rams across the valley, but they were too far away to photograph. J enjoyed watching them for a bit — she likes horny mammals.
We returned to the RV. I downloaded the images I took, and did a quick edit of them before going to bed.
